AUGUST 21
After researching (i.e. scrolling through Pinterest) ways in which other people have finished DIY palette bars and counters, I collected an array of images and options as inspiration for the new space and sent the images below to the client.
My vision is to take the existing palette bar and refinish it by either covering the slats entirely in multi-colored wood paneling or using corrugated metal to brighten the base and using sealed, shiplap style wood as a counter top. The wooden countertops will help to better camouflage any coffee stains that may occur over time while also proving cheaper to finish than a stone top. I'm suggesting taking the cups down and replacing them with exposed lighting fixtures, which are very sleek and modern and will ad a nice little pop of warmth to the gray and wood colored space while also replacing the cups with a more refined ceiling fixture. Lastly, my vision is to remove the imitation brick wall covering and replacing it with a hodge-podge of doors and door sections. The church is currently using a similar concept as a backdrop on the main stage. The doors are a reminder of the mission to the congregation - that behind every door there is a story, and therefore we should always be for our neighbor. I'd like to remove the doors from the stage and repurpose them as a wall covering behind the coffee bar to add color to the space as well as continue to include the imagery of doors in the church's design.

I met with my client to discuss project objectives. The goal is to redesign an existing space within the church building. The space is a small corner of the main lobby that is utilized as a coffee station on Sunday mornings. The existing space contains a custom, palette board bar with burlap and Christmas lights underneath, showing through the palette gaps, and a red countertop. The wall behind the bar is covered by an imitation brick covering. Above the station there are dozens of plain, white coffee mugs suspended from the ceiling using twine. The client wishes to update the coffee corner to feel more modern and fit in with an array of new furniture also coming into the rest of the space.

I met with my client to discuss project objectives. The goal is to create signs advertising two specific initiatives outlined by the congregation. Each initiative will require two signs: one to place directly on church property and another to place around the city, directing people to the church. The signs must deliver the message and purpose of the initiative as quickly as possible as they are intended to be viewed while the audience is driving by. We discussed existing and potential tag lines for each initiative and I collected fonts, color palettes, and technical requirements for designing and preparing the files.
When starting such an open-ended project such as this one, a good conversation with the client and rough sketches are key parts of my process. Knowing my client better allows me to get a better idea of what styles, color palettes, and language will make them happiest with the final project and (hopefully) minimize chances of having to start from scratch at a later date.

* INITIAL PROJECT NOTES
AUGUST 17-21
I reviewed project objectives and initial sketches and began work on mock-ups to present to client. I also met with other elders within the congregation to get relevant feedback on the aesthetic direction of the signage. CelebrateRecovery signage is limited to flat color and text. For Our Neighbor campaign imagery inspired by doors (behind every door there is a story) and neighborhoods (though I prefer the ones that have no imagery at all and are simply text on a solid color). Mockups were sent to client. Waiting on a response to set a time to meet and discuss.

I was approached by a friend about creating a logo for her existing business, Building Bridges Counseling. She has been in business for a while, but has never pursued a logo. She requested that even if the imagery of a bridge was used in the logo, she didn't want it to appear too architectural.
When starting on a branding project, I always create an array of logo mockups. For this particular one, I focused mainly on transforming the form of the letters representing her business into imagery as well as abstracted drawings of bridges. I also created several color palettes that I believe successfully represent the tone of her counseling business.
