TOWARD INDIE
INDIE MUSIC MAGAZINE
TOWARD INDIE is a mock zine inspired by my interest in the Indie Music scene as well as my personal friend (Adam Christopher, ft. above and below) and his pursuit of a music career. The zine uses simple grids and a combination of script, serif, and sans-serif fonts to mimic existing magazines as well as incorporates large blocks of white space and blocks of flat color to maintain its personal identity.
"What do you want to do with a Graphic Design degree?"
That is the question, isn't it? For years (and sometimes still today) I answered it with, "I want to work with musical artists." So when an assignment arrived directing us to show we could use grids in large-scale formats by creating either a magazine or an annual report, I was one of only two students in my class - I might've been the only one, now that I think on it - to choose to create a magazine (even against my teacher's insistence that an annual report design would look better in my portfolio.) And I knew exactly what I wanted my zine to focus on.
Music does and always has played an integral role in my life - it inspires me, helps me relate to others, and often informs the way I approach the world. After meeting and becoming friends with Adam, I became even more interested in what it really meant to start from the bottom and pursue a career in music. "Toward Indie" allowed me to experiment with grid work, editorial design, and photography as well as feature my personal friend (even if it was only to my class.)
